The chairman of the Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State, Hon. Prince Ikechukwu Odono, has assured the residents of the area of adequate security.
Odono, who gave the assurance shortly after receiving a Chieftaincy title of IKEUDO from the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), said that his office is collaborating with relevant stakeholders in the area and security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and properties of the people.
It would be recalled that Ohaukwu Local Government has in the recent times rocked with insecurity, killings, and destruction of lives and properties.
Ultimatenews reports that a point of sale (POS) operator, Mr. Louis Enoshi, a native of Umuogudu Akpu Ngbo in the local government area, was brutally killed by yet-to-be identified assailants in his house, right in the presence of his pregnant wife and a son, and made away with his mobile phone, cash, and POS machines.
Reacting to the development, the council chairman, who condemned the killing, said that since his assumption of office, he has made the security of lives and property his priority in the area.
He said, "In the area of security, we have done so much since my assumption in office. I inaugurated what we call homeland security, which has been doing well.
"This homeland security has been doing very well in securing the people of Ohaukwu local government in conjunction with the Neighborhood Watch security outfit of the state.
"But what happened a few days ago was an armed robbery attack. These people attacked a POS operator in his house in Umuagara, Ezzamgbo, at about 2 a.m. when the EEDC took the light.
"They flashed a torchlight at the window, and the wife of the deceased asked who was flashing the light, and the husband went and opened it to inquire who it was. They shot him, after which they forced the door open and strapped him. They made away with his phones, the POS machine, and some cash.
"The security agencies are looking into the matter to unravel the criminals. What I want to tell you is that we have been doing everything within our power to secure the entire LGA. We are partnering with all the security agencies, including the local vigilantes, to ensure the lives and properties of our people are saved.
"Yes, we have had pockets of insecurity reports, the killing of the POS operator, the killing of police personnel, and orders, but we have put measures in place to see that all these things will not repeat themselves again in my LGA." Odono said.
Meanwhile, workers in the council, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees Ohankwu LGA Branch, have endorsed the chairman, Hon. Odono, for a second tenure in office based on his pragmatic and people-oriented leadership in the council.
