The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance in the 2023 general elections in Ebonyi State, Engr Chukwuma Nwandugo, has collapsed his political structure into the All Progressives Congress in the state and urged his supporters to vote the APC gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Francis Nwifuru, at the polls.
According to him, the advice of the elders of Izzi clan, where both himself and the APC governorship candidate hail from compelled him to step down, adding he was simply obeying the people he was desirous of serving.
He stated this during a meeting with journalists, in Abakaliki, on Friday night.
He said, "What really happened was that there were about five of us from the Izzi local government area that are contesting for the position of governor. And our Izzi Nnodo Elders Forum has decided and instructed all of us that five candidates cannot go into Election for the same position at the same time and from the same place. That if we do, the five of us are mostly likely going to lose the election.
"So they (the elders) suggested that one candidate should be the candidate for all of us, and they gave that instruction just last week. And they urged all of us to queue at the back of one candidate they have selected to enable us go into the contest and win, as a people. So, the person they selected is the Speaker, Hon. Francis Nwifuru, who is the candidate of the APC in the 2023 governorship election.
"So, I as a person accepted this very resolution because this is what the elders have sat down for more than three months to deliberate on, and they have decided and concluded. And the decision for me, is perfect. What made me go into the contest initially is the desire to serve my people and so, if the people am so desirous to serve have said queue behind this one person, he's the one we have selected to provide that same leadership then I have no reason not to obey them and work assiduously towards the realisation of that project.
"I want to unequivocally state that I have a total and unalloyed confidence in the young man called Francis Nwifuru. As a matter of fact he is my younger brother. Many people have asked are you sure you are going to get appointment in his government if he wins? In very simple terms, I told them already have appointment and they said what's your appointment? And I do tell them that I'm already a senior brother to the governor. Senior brother to the governor for me is already everything. So, if an official one comes up, that's a different thing altogether.
"Both the governorship candidate of the APC and myself have a particular place we draw our authorities from (that's the elders), who are superintending over what we are doing. So, I'm very confident that if God gives us the grace and we win this election, I'm going to be part of the government, and will be making my input towards the success of the government for the benefit of the entire Ebonyi people.
"There is one thing that people don't know about the person of Francis Nwifuru. He's someone who is open-minded and who longs for knowledge and experience. The role I'm going to play is that I'm not going to be far from the government with or without any office. I'm going to play very serious advisory and brotherly role. I'm also going to play a patriotic role. These things put together, will give more confidence to the people of Ebonyi State, in Nwifuru's government, if he wins."
