Umahi suspends Perm Sec, SA over alleged diesel theft




Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has suspended the Permanent Secretary, ministry of Power and Energy, Engr. Godwin Nwankwo and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Utility, Hon. Emmanuel Nwangbo over alleged diesel theft.

The State Commissioner for Information, Hon Uchenna Orji announced this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki.

Orji said the EXCO received a report on the persistent theft of diesel meant for Streetlights handled by the Ministry of Power and Energy and expressed concern over the disturbing volumes of diesel that have been lost in the hands of the persons involved in the business of Streetlight. 

He said: "EXCO received a report on the persistent theft of diesel meant for Streetlights handled by the Ministry of Power and Energy and noted the disturbing volumes of diesel that have been lost in the hands of the persons involved in the business of Streetlight".

" Exco therefore resolved that all concerned in the business of the Streetlight supervision in the State be investigated by the Department of State Security Service with a view to unmasking the perpetrators". 

"The Head of Service was further directed to cause a thorough investigation of the Ministry’s staff involved in the theft of diesel and take appropriate actions as required by the rules of the State Civil Service".
"Meanwhile, Exco approved the suspension from office of the two persons who are directly responsible for supervision of streetlights under the Ministry of Power namely Permanent  Secretary, Engr. Godwin Nwankwo Ministry of Power and Energy, and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Utility, Hon. Emmanuel Nwangbo". He said.

Meanwhile,  Governor Umahi has sworn in new special Assistant, coordinators of Development Centers and members of local government advisory council.

The appointees were sworn in at the Executive Council Chambers, Ochoudo Centenary City, Abakaliki.

Addressing the appointees, the Governor urged them to buckle up for service to people of the State.

"There is nobody who works for the public with clean heart that God will not take care of and I assure you that as you are working for the public, God will be working in your families."

He urged them not to see their appointments as political patronage but a call to contribute their quota to the development of the State.

In his acceptance speech on-behalf of other appointees, Mr. Chidozie Igwe thanked the Governor for finding them worthy to serve and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in them.

"Your Excellency, on-behalf of my fellow appointees, we accept the appointments wholeheartedly, thank you and God bless you."


Those sworn in are Mr. Chidozie Igwe, Special Assistant; Eze Ama Okoro and Sampson Ukpai as Coordinators of Edda North and Ekumenyi Development Centres.

Others are Barrister Stanley Odanwu, Okorie Ogbonnaya Philip, Obinna Ekezie, Alike Emmanuel, Dr. Emmanuel Egba and Clement Nwoba as members of the Local Government Advisory Committee.
