Effium Communal War: Ebonyi govt sets up Judiciary Panel of inquiry

Ebonyi State government has announced its decision to set up judicial panel of enquiry  to find out the remote and immediate causes of the  Effium community bloody clash that occurred over the weekend that claimed many lives and destruction of properties

Governor David Umahi who announced this at the Community Primary School Effium, during an emergency security meeting over the  crises said the panel will look into the remote and immediate cause of the clashes and make recommendations on the way forward.

He directed the deputy, Dr Kelechi Igwe; the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr Cletus Ofoke; Principal Secretary to the Governor, chief Clement Nweke; and his Chief of Staff, Dr Queen Agwu to work together and recommend to to him within three days, the modalities for the constitution of the panel.


“The Deputy Governor will work with Attorney General, Principal Secretary and Chief of Staff to set up judicial panel of inquiry into the crisis here.”

Umahi who expressed grave concern over the ugly and unfortunate incident said government will not fold its arms and watch the lives and property of its citizens being destroyed


He announced the suspension of all political appointees from the community till further notice.

He  also announced the suspension of all developmental projects his administration was undertaking in the community till further notice.

"All political appointments in this five wards are hereby suspended. I have no power to suspend elected people, but the House of Assembly does have and I’m going to report to them and they are going to take decision on that.”

He said all the political appointees and stakeholders in police custody would remain in detention until peace returned in the area.

“The political appointees will remain in the detention whether they are directly involved until absolute peace returns and anybody connected will be charged for murder; so you will not see them quickly.


Umahi directed State the Attorney general and commissioner for Justice, Barr Cletus Ofoke, to procure court order that “for anybody to be released from detention under whatever condition, I have to authorize it.”


“The women will be the one to report to me. The women will come in their numbers, equal number from Effium and Ezza-Effium will come and report and say, there is peace.

He further vowed that  any political appointee or elected  found to have hand in the crisis would be tried for murder and arson.


 “I have asked telecommunications companies to give me transcripts of their phone calls, we will screen them and if they are found guilty they will be prosecuted. This is murder and arson and anyone found complicit will be prosecuted and jailed,” he said



The governor called on those who have fled to return home as security has been beefed up in the area.
He ordered security agencies to deal decisively with anyone found disturbing the peace in the area.
