The South -East Governors’ Forum and other leaders in the region have condemned the shooting of #EndSARS protesters at the lekki toll gate in Lagos.

The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi  who stated this in Abakaliki , while briefing journalists on the outcome of their virtual meeting, expressed deep sympathies to families that lost their loved ones during the unwarranted carnage and called for speedy investigations into the incident to bring those involved to justice.

Umahi said, “While we are sympathising with the Lagos State Government and others who have lost their citizens in the protests , we appeal to the youths in the country to disembark from the protests, it has been hijacked by hoodlums .

While we equally maintain that the demands of the #EndSARS protesters have been met by the governments of many states. We advise youths to constructively engage with government towards meeting other genuine demands of theirs ."

Umahi advised his fellow Governors to bring the youths close enough to governance for them to begin to appreciate the gains and enormous challenges in leadership, adding, “We appeal to the youths to forgive their leaders wherever they have failed them, because we will go back to the drawing board. ”

The leaders who further condemned the unwarranted destruction of lives and critical infrastructure belonging to both government and individuals which as a great disservice to the nation appealed to government and leaders form other geopolitical zones from the country to do all within the ambit of the law to protect the lives and property of all the ethnic nationalities within their domain

He said that the South-East will continue to maintain peace and guarantee the safety of those living within the zone.

"We don't believe that destruction of our property, killing of  people will bring the solution, their voices have been heard. We, as leaders of this nation have a lot to make from the peaceful demands of the peaceful #Endsars protesters. As a nation we can't continue to destroy what we're able to build, wjether it's private or government owned . So I appeal to all our leaders all over the nation to please, do everything to continue to maintain peace among all the  ethnic groups within your domain. This is a very critical moment in the history of our nation."

The Governors also commended President Muhamadu Buhari and all other leaders who have expressed their beliefs in oneness of Nigeria.

They stressed that destruction, killings and provoking of security agencies would not bring solution to the demands of #EndSARS protesters, but pragmatic response and steps so far adopted by the federal and state governments.
