NCCPI Seeks support for campaign against Cancer

The National Cancer Control and Prevention initiative (NCCPI) has called on government at all levels and weathy individuals to support the  health sector in the fight against  cancer in the country.

The south east zonal coordinator of the agency, Professor Esther  Ajuluchukwu, Made the call during the World All Cancer October Commemorations in Abakaliki 

She said the fight against cancer begins with early detection through proper screening via a mammography or a high resolution ultrasound machine, adding that cancer is not a death sentence if early detected,


She said the agency, in collaboration with the Alex Ekweme University Teaching hospital (AE-FUTHA,), Abakaliki organized the programme to commemorate the world Cancer day.
 
The event which has its theme "I am  able I will fight Cancer" featured  lectures and a walk against cancer within the Abakaliki aimed at creating awareness and sensitising members of the public on early detection and treatment.


" Cancer is an unwanted enermy worldwide, and I am so passionate about fighting the cancer, right from the days I was trained in Western Germany,

"I came home to my own country to help develop our nation,

"I have been on the fight against cancer because if it's not prevented, but earlier detected, it's still curable,


"the best is to prevent it by avoiding hazardous foods, smoking and drinking of alcoholic beverages".

She stressed however that the funds needed to carry out the screenings and treatment mostly comes from international donor agencies, hence she called on government at all levels to encourage the fight against cancer financially, by providing the basic equipments for diagnosis and treatment.


In his remarks the chief host and chief medical director of Alex Ekweme University Teaching hospital, Dr Emeka Onwe Ogah, represented by Dr. Nnadozie ugchukwu called on the government to do more on sensitisation of the public on earlier detection of cancer.

"The government should invest significantly in health, the diagnostic equipments needed to make cancer detection is expensive, but it cannot be as expensive as the lives of people,

"The government should do more on sensitisation of the public on early detection, while providing the necessary equipments to aid the process." He added
