Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has promised to set up victims' support fund to compensate the families of victims of police brutality in the State.
Umahi who disclosed this while addressing ENDSARS protesters that blocked the entrance of the old government house Abakaliki pledged to set up a judicial panel of enquiry to investigate the alleged police brutality in Ebonyi State,
According to him, the judicial panel of inquiry will be set up on tomorrow (Tuesday) and urged the protesters to nominate two representatives.
Umahi who assured the protesters that nobody would molest them as long as he remained the Governor of Ebonyi State told them that it was their constitutional right to protest.
"I want to assure you that as long as I remain the Governor of Ebonyi State, nobody will molest you. You are fighting for your right and your future. What you are doing is constitutional, but I want you to be orderly to get something out of it."
The protesters had besieged the entrance gate of the government house as early as 10am and refused to leave until they were addressed by the Governor.
The protest halted human and vehicular movements as they blocked all the roads within the government house axis for more than six hours.
Umahi further assured the protesters that he would direct the State Commissioner of Police and the Army Commander to dismantle all road blocks in the state.
"One of the things I am going to take up with the commissioner of police and Army commander is to dismantle road blocks in Ebonyi State," Umahi said.
Governor Umahi who gave out his mobile number to the protesters, directed them to henceforth, report incidence of police brutality and extortion to him, even as he told them to resist police extortion.
Earlier, Barrister Steve Ugama,who spoke earlier, on behalf of the protesters, told Governor Umahi that they wanted an end to police brutality, compensation to the families of victims of SARS brutality and immediate release of those illegally detained by SARS.
They also demanded that the State Government should checkmate the activities of policemen of Eke-aba police division and the local government taxes collectors. END//
