Education Experts in the country have been tasked to review the current curricular for schools and colleges to resolve the rising unemployment among school leavers.
Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Civil Service Commission, Mrs Ekereobong Akpan said this in an interview with newsmen in her office in Uyo, the State capital.
Mrs Akpan, who reacted to the recent unemployment data released by the National Bureau of Statistics ( NBS), charged private sector operators to create more job opportunities to complement government's efforts in solving unemployment challenges.
According to her, the curriculum of our universities should also be changed.
"Somebody told me that a nearby country only do courses that would motivate employers to have the need to recruit them after graduating from the University, she added.
Akpan, who was the former Head of Service (HoS) regretted that many courses in the universities in recent times, could not help graduates to gain employment after graduation, adding that, "some of the courses we are doing today make
it difficult for people to have employment is a big problem.
‘‘People study courses that employers would ask them: what can you do? The person needs to be trained and retrained for him or her to be useful. Let this period of lockdown be an eye-opener to all of us".
The Chairman, however, stated that the only thing that could be done now was to embark on massive private sector development; saying,"whatever any person can do would help at this time of our nation's history".
She advised undergraduates to study courses that would add value to their certificates, and make them relevant in the Labour Market, while education administrators should restructure school curricular to meet the present realities in order to solve unemployment problem.
