Residents of Udensi, Nkaliki, Ojeoweri and Convent road in Abakaliki and their environs can now sleep with their two eyes closed as police in the state has killed two armed robbery suspects who have been terrorising them and arrested some of the suspects alive.
Parading the suspects before Newsmen in Abakaliki the commissioner for Police, Ebonyi state command CP PHILIP SULE MAKU said the gang which have been terrorising the residents of the metropolis were smashed by the operative of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to the command.
He said "following a distress call at Udensi on the 4th August, 2020 that robbers were operating at the area, operative of the Command attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) responded to the distress call but unfortunately the robbers fled the scene before their arrival".
"While on the trail, information was received on 11th August, 2020 that armed robbers were attacking at No. 8 Ojeowerri Street Abakaliki, operative of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) swooped on them and arrested one of the suspects Ebuka Jude m 21yrs while others escaped. One revolver locally made with six rounds of live ammunition and (one expanded) was recovered him".
"The suspect made useful statement to the Police and led the Police operatives on follow up investigation to their hideout at Omega Avenue Abakaliki, the other Gang members on sighting the Policemen open fire on them, during the gun duel, the two (2) of the robbers sustained various degrees of bullet injuries while others fled the scene. The injured ones were rushed AE-Federal Teaching Hospital Abakalili for medical treatment but confirmed by a medical practitioner on duty, their bodies deposited at the same Hospital mortuary for Preservation and Autopsy".
"Subsequently, The two (2) other members of the gang were arrested namely;a) Monday Ekwe m 21yrs
b) Stanley Kodirichukwu Obijulu m.
"The suspects admitted to the crime and added that the seven (7) man gang was among inmates delivered from the jail by the State Government as result COVID 19 pandemic recently. And further confessed to be members of the syndicate who have been terrorizing residents and Shops within Abakaliki Metropolis, which includes among others:-
"Cosmetic shop along Udensi Street, where the robbers made away with the Cash sum of One hundred and Forty thousand (#140,000), a phone and many other valuables from the shop owner, a female customer was also robbed".
"Supermarket at Udensi Street, the Items robed from shop owner includes; the cash sum of Two hundred and sixty thousand (#260,000), Tele-communication cards valued Eighty six Thousand Naira (#86000) and other valuables".
"A Provision Store located at Convent Road Abakalili, where the hoodlums dispossessed the shop owner of cash sum of Eight Hundred and Thirty Thousand Naira (#830,000), and two (2) phones. The cash sum of Forty Three Naira (#43000) and many phones were robbed from customers'.
"POS Center located at Nkaliki Road Abakaliki, The shop was also robbed of the sum cash of one Hundred Twenty Thousand Naira (#120,000)".
"Cosmetics shop located at Ojeoweri street Abakalili, A male customer was dispossessed of cash sum of One Hundred (#100,000), Iphone 7, hand ring and gold necklace valued Six hundred and thirty thousand Naira (#63000), two (2) other phones and valuables".
"The hoodlums also led my Operatives to arrest three (3) suspects, namely:-
a) Abiora Ifeanyi 27yrs
b) Nwanumara Samuel m 30yrs and
c) Emmanuel Darlington m, whom they alleged to be their receivers". He said.
In a related development the state command has also arrested and paraded twelve (12) suspects involved in destroying houses and properties of Ndi-heme community in Ivo LGA of the State .
Parading the suspects the commissioner of Police said they were arrested following a distress call from Madukwe Cletus Ifeanyi a native of Ishiagu in Ivo LGA of the State that a group of people were destroying properties in Ndi-heme community.
He said "the suspects made useful statement to the Police and narrated that they are all natives of Amahiba in Isikwato LGA of Abia State but were hired by one Barr. Kennedy Agbai to Ndiheme Community in Ivo LGA of Ebonyi State to Renovate his buildings in the area which include removal of doors, windows and other things, with a daily pay of Four Thousand Naira (#4000) each".
According to him "Preliminary investigation revealed that there is an outstanding age long land dispute between Ndiobasi and Ndi-heme, communities in Ivo LGA of the State which case in the court and the court judgment was made in favor of Ndiobasi Community, this prompted Ndi-heme community to go for an appeal in the upper court. While the court of process is still on, the defense council to Ndiobasi Community, Barr Kennedy Agbai took laws into his hands and hired heavily armed men numbering about thirty (30) who stormed Ndiheme Community Ishiagu and damaged over Ten (10) houses, killed livestocks and inflicted machete injuries on innocent citizens, living two (2) persons Mrs Patricia Mbam f and Chibuike Kela m unconscious, which the victims are currently receiving treatment in the hospital at the area".
Meanwhile, the command has said that effort is on top Geer to arrest Bar. Kennedy Agbai who fled the scene immediately after the incident. End.
