A group, Center For Social Value And Early Girl Childhood Development (CESVED) has organized training for Journalists in Ebonyi State in order to fully integrate them into the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting(FGM/C) in the State.
The two-day programme, tagged "voice out to save the girl Child" held in conjunction with Amplify Change at Salt lake hotels Abakaliki, was organized to train Journalists on how best to effectively use their media platforms to support the campaign against FGM/C.
The President of the group,Gift Augustine Abu, in an interview, said the Center decided to engage Journalists, knowing full well the enormous role they could play towards ending FGM/C.
"We are in Ebonyi State to organize End FGM/C Journalists training. To see how the Journalists could have an idea on how to end FGM/C, using their different media platforms. Because, we believe that Media are the power house of every State.
"Media can pull out a lot of issues and strengthen them. So, we felt they need to understand what FGM/C is all about, so that when they are discussing it, they will know how and where to start from, and the right words to use.
"We will also organize similar training for medical practitioners, organize End FGM football competition and establish End FGM clubs in primary and secondary schools in Ebonyi. We shall do all these in order to reach the everybody, including those in the hinterlands,"she explained.
She further disclosed that the Center was already discussing with education authorities in the State on the need to include End FGM/C campaign in school curriculum. "We have met with the State Commissioner for Education and engaged him on the need for the State to include FGM/C campaign in the school curricular and his response was very positive", she said.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of CESVED, Chief Augustine Enyi in his remarks, noted that some persons who indulge in the practice of female genital mutilation, ignorantly trace it to the time of Adam, but noted that the practice was inhuman and should be stopped.
He urged Journalists to assist in stepping down the campaign against FGM/C to the hinterlands.END//
